NCC AUX.

NCC wanted to make the work of the paver team’s foreman easier when it came to dealing with issues and planning work. A “smart box” was added to their pavers that tracked its speed, asphalt temperature, weather conditions, among other things. This app took that data and made it useful for foreman to help them predict, prevent and solve issues, and also allow past performance analysis.

The making of NCC AUX

Flow diagrams, existing software and training video

We carried out interviews, contextual inquiries, reviewed process documentation, and watched training videos to understand how paving teams work, and identify their needs.

NCC-Persona

That understanding was distilled into a persona and this was used to help ground our design decisions.

Affinity-diagram-NCC

We began grouping this information, and creating a hierarchy. We then looked at it and stood in the shoes of Jonny, our persona to see what information he needed.

Whiteboard sessions ensued, where we sketched our approaches and considered the pros and cons.

Then I began prototyping in Axure, to further refine and iterate on our design concepts. These prototypes started out in low-fidelity, and eventually became high-fidelity.

Early-prototype-NCC

Prototypes were tested on the target device, a Microsoft Surface Pro.

The prototype is hi-fidelity in nature which helped us demonstrate the concept to the client.
